Forex position size calculator

Decide two things before you trade: where your stop-loss goes and the most you are willing to lose. Those two numbers set the largest position you can take. This calculator does the math. Nothing you enter is sent anywhere.

This tool does not tell you what or when to trade. Where you place your stop is your decision. Leveraged forex trading can lose more than you deposit. Read your broker's risk disclosure before trading.

Your account and risk per trade

Examples: EUR/USD with a USD account → leave empty (1). USD/JPY with a USD account → type 1/150.25 (one yen in dollars). EUR/USD with a GBP account → the GBP value of 1 USD, e.g. 0.75.

Order sizes, lot sizes and leverage limits depend on your broker and country. Use your broker's figures.

How it works: loss per unit = stop distance (incl. spread) × pip size × conversion rate. Largest position = amount at risk ÷ loss per unit, rounded down to your smallest order size. Margin is an estimate at the leverage you chose.

Example

Say your balance is $10,000 and you risk 1% per trade ($100). You buy EUR/USD at 1.0850 with a stop at 1.0825 — a 25-pip stop. With a USD account each pip is worth $0.0001 per unit, so the stop costs $0.0025 per unit. $100 ÷ $0.0025 = 40,000 units (0.4 lots), and the loss if the stop is hit is $100.

Widen the stop and the same $100 buys a smaller position. The idea is to let the stop and your risk decide the size — not to pick a size first and think about the stop later.
