Job Profit Calculator
Enter the price you quoted and what the job cost you. You get the profit, margin and markup, and the price you need to hit your target margin. Nothing you enter leaves your browser.
| Labour (hours × rate) | |
| Total cost | |
| Margin (profit ÷ price) | |
| Markup (profit ÷ cost) | |
| Price needed for margin |
Money is rounded to 2 decimals and percentages to 1 decimal. The price needed is rounded up to the next cent. Margin shows — when the price is 0; markup shows — when the cost is 0.
Margin vs markup
Both use the same profit, but divide by different numbers. People mix them up and end up underpricing.
Profit = Price − Total cost
Margin % = Profit ÷ Price × 100
Markup % = Profit ÷ Total cost × 100
Price for target margin = Total cost ÷ (1 − target)
Example: a job costs 1,000 and you charge 1,250. Profit is 250. Markup is 25% (250 ÷ 1,000), but margin is only 20% (250 ÷ 1,250). Adding 25% to your costs does not give you a 25% margin. For a 25% margin you need 1,000 ÷ 0.75 = 1,333.33… — the calculator rounds this up to 1,333.34 so you never land below your target.
